event theme ideas

Themed events are every planner’s groove breaker. Whether you set one up for a client, or within your organization, you create a fresh wave that guarantees to leave the participants with lasting memories. There’s plenty of ways you can go about creating a theme – props, lighting, costumes, it’s up to you how far you’re going to want to push it. The hardest part may be deciding on what theme to introduce, though. Stay with me as I list eleven event theme ideas that will get you out of a rut. Let’s go!

Holding a themed event will not only create a novelty experience for its participants but also provide a much-needed change from the usual course of business for you. A leitmotif provides structure and makes your meeting stand out. Even if you’re working on a tight budget, you can still whip up some minimal props to add flare.

Now, I heard you like themes, so I used a theme in the post, so you can theme while you run your themed event.

I browsed Instagram for some photos that should get your imagination going. Go ahead and recreate any of the themes I included, or build on top of them to create your unique experience.

Retro / vintage

Nostalgic Millenials are all about vintage clothing, games, movies and other stuff that reminds them of their childhood. Why don’t you capitalize on that and create an 80s/90s style party? I’m pretty sure many of you will even be able to find some basic props up in the attic.

Rainforest

Tired of the concrete jungle? Hectic city life is killing you? Why not change the environment for a minute and escape to a rainforest? This is a great opportunity to stimulate multiple senses at once with proper sound and smell effects.

Fairy tale

We all crave a little magic in our lives. Elves, wizards, dragons, gnomes, and other fantastic creatures are all welcome to join this theme party. An excellent opportunity for the usually serious individuals to have fun and play a little dress-up.

Hollywood glam

Ah, the glam life! Who hasn’t fantasized about being a Hollywood star at least once at some point in their life? The characters, the movies, the Oscars, the red carpet – here’s the opportunity to experience all that and then some.

Circus

It’s not only the adults, kids can party in style too. A circus theme provides a lot of prop variety and has many positive associations. There’s a lot of room here to keep the youngsters occupied all day long.

Oldschool diner

Another retro theme people are going to love, as it brings back fond memories of simpler times. I love how the organizer used a quality printed backdrop instead of a whole physical setup and still kept the vibe going.

Flower power

An explosion of color. Consider using both artificial and real flowers for the best effect. This event theme may be a particularly good idea during the bleaker winter months when a lot of people are under the weather.

Hop on the back of a unicorn and ride this increasingly popular event theme. There are balloons, tasty-looking colors, cakes, and the mythical, one of a kind creature, which is an allegory of your event, right?

A celebration of wildlife, no guns allowed. Relevant props should be easily obtainable and everyone will be familiar with the theme. It may be a good idea to set this up in the summertime, and maybe even outdoors.

Miami Vice

This may be my favorite theme on the list. The whole setup gives off a very partyish vibe and puts you in the mood right away. It’s a little exotic, mysterious, and outlandish in a positive way. Go grab a drink and start mingling!

Emoji

We all use emoji these days and they’ve even been made into a movie. There are many ways you can apply this theme – get some 3D smiley models done, print and hang out flat versions of them, or design a set of pins and ask participants to wear their favorite ones.

Final word

When organizing a themed event, deliver an experience to remember, give people something to talk about afterward. There’s a leitmotif for any type of event, whether it’s a business meeting or an informal party.

Work with the client to understand who the participants will be and come up with a theme that’s going to fit the overall profile best. Determine the budget, proceed with the preparations, and stay as consistent as possible throughout the event. Enjoy!
